Eight Dead, Eight Injured in Fatal Lagos Road Accident, Confirms LASTMA

A fatal road accident in Lagos has claimed the lives of eight people and left eight others severely injured following a head-on collision between a commercial bus and a truck.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, July 6, 2025, at the Atura Bus Stop along the Mile 2–Badagry Expressway.

According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), a 16-seater commercial Mazda bus, with registration number KJA 811 YF, collided head-on with a heavy-duty DAF truck, registered as T1 4636 LA. The crash was described as violent, leading to the immediate death of eight passengers, including the driver and conductor of the bus.

Eyewitnesses and emergency responders reported that the bus was traveling at high speed when the driver lost control and veered into the opposite lane, crashing directly into the oncoming truck.

The impact was so severe that several passengers were trapped inside the mangled bus until emergency personnel arrived.

Eight other passengers who survived the collision sustained varying degrees of injuries and were quickly evacuated to the Badagry General Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims, but efforts are ongoing to notify their families.

The response to the emergency was swift, with officials from LASTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigerian Police (Morogbo Division), and soldiers from the 244 Recce Battalion of Ibereko Barracks all participating in the rescue operation.

Speaking after visiting the crash site, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured passengers a speedy recovery.

He blamed the accident on excessive speeding and driver recklessness, noting that such tragic incidents are avoidable if road users obey traffic regulations and exercise caution.

“This is a heartbreaking loss. These lives could have been saved if the necessary precautions had been taken. We urge all commercial and private drivers to avoid speeding and ensure their vehicles are in good working condition before hitting the road,” Bakare-Oki stated.

The LASTMA boss also emphasized that the agency remains committed to the safety and protection of lives on Lagos roads, aligning with the THEMES Plus Agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration.

He reiterated the need for continuous public enlightenment and strict enforcement of traffic laws to prevent such tragic occurrences.

The incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for greater discipline among drivers and improved road safety awareness across the state. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing.
