Grief in Gondomar: Liverpool Star Diogo Jota and Brother Laid to Rest in Emotional Joint Funeral

A joint funeral ceremony was held for Liverpool star Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André Silva, who tragically died in a car crash on Thursday. The service took place at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar church in Jota’s hometown, Gondomar, Portugal. Family, friends, and teammates gathered to pay their last respects to the 28-year-old forward and his 25-year-old brother.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot and several players, including Virgil van Dijk, Alexis Mac Allister, and Jordan Henderson, attended the funeral to bid farewell to their teammate. Other football stars who paid tribute included Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva, Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot, and Nottingham Forest’s Jota Silva. Henderson, who had a close bond with Jota since he joined Liverpool in 2020, delivered an emotional tribute at Anfield before flying to Portugal for the funeral.

The brothers lost their lives in a devastating car accident in Zamora, north-west Spain, when their Lamborghini Huracan suffered a suspected tyre blowout and burst into flames. The news of their passing sent shockwaves through the football community, with many players and clubs offering condolences.

Initially scheduled for Friday, the funeral was postponed to Saturday due to paperwork issues that needed to be resolved before the bodies could be repatriated. A wake was held at São Cosme Chapel, followed by a funeral mass at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar church, a place significant to Jota’s early football career and personal life.
