10 Dead, 3 Injured as Bus Plunges into River in Ogun Road Crash

Tragedy struck on Saturday in Ogun State as 10 lives were lost in a fatal road accident on the Ome Bridge, along the Awa-bound Ijebu ode Obada Expressway, located in Ijebu North Local Government Area.

The Ogun State Traffic and Emergency Compliance Agency (TRACE) confirmed the incident, stating that it involved a Mitsubishi bus bearing registration number EJ829LSR.

The vehicle, according to initial findings, veered off the road and plunged into a river after a failed overtaking manoeuvre.

TRACE spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, disclosed that three additional occupants sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital. He attributed the cause of the crash to reckless driving and wrongful overtaking, emphasizing that the impact of the crash caused the vehicle to somersault before ending up in the river.

Emergency responders, including TRACE officials, police, and local divers, were mobilized to the scene for rescue operations. The deceased have since been evacuated and deposited at the mortuary, while the injured were quickly transported for urgent medical care.

Akinbiyi urged motorists to avoid dangerous overtaking and adhere strictly to road safety regulations, noting that most avoidable crashes in the state have stemmed from driver impatience and negligence.

The incident has thrown the local community into mourning, with residents and commuters calling on authorities to increase road patrols and enforce stricter penalties for reckless driving to prevent further tragedies.
