Niger PDP Legal Adviser, Murtala Mohammed, Resigns After 27 Years of Service

The Niger State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Barrister Murtala Mohammed, the State Legal Adviser, has officially resigned from the party after 27 years of dedicated service. His decision, which took many party faithful by surprise, was conveyed in a formal letter dated July 4, 2025, addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman of Nassarawa ‘A’ Ward in Chanchaga Local Government Area.

Mohammed, a founding member of the PDP and a respected figure in the state’s political landscape, cited “recent disheartening political developments” as the reason for his resignation. He expressed disappointment in the current direction of the party and noted that his decision reflected not only personal conviction but also the sentiments of a wide circle of his loyal supporters.

In his letter, he wrote, “After a thorough evaluation of the recent happenings in the party, I have come to the painful but necessary decision to part ways with the PDP. I have always believed in internal democracy and party discipline, and sadly, those ideals seem to have eroded.”

Barrister Mohammed’s political journey with the PDP spans from its inception in 1999. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, starting as a ward executive committee member and eventually becoming the State Legal Adviser a position he held with distinction. His contributions to the party, particularly in legal advisory roles, have been described by colleagues as pivotal to the PDP’s survival and success in the state over the decades.

As part of his resignation, he also returned his original PDP membership card and forwarded copies of his letter to the State Chairman of the party, signifying a complete and formal departure from the political platform.

Though Mohammed has not announced his next political move, he hinted at future engagement through alternative avenues, saying he remains committed to the democratic progress of Niger State and Nigeria at large. “I am not leaving politics. I will continue to work for the good of the people through a more purposeful and inclusive platform,” he stated.

His resignation adds to a growing list of high-profile exits and internal wranglings within the PDP in Niger State, as the party struggles to maintain cohesion ahead of the 2027 general elections. Party insiders suggest that the vacuum created by Mohammed’s departure could further destabilize the party’s legal and strategic framework unless urgently addressed.

With the exit of a figure widely regarded as one of the intellectual backbones of the PDP in Niger, political observers are closely watching what ripple effects this development might have on the party’s structure and on the broader political calculations within the state.
