Dozens Pay Tribute to Liverpool Star Diogo Jota in Portugal Following Fatal Crash

Dozens of mourners gathered in Portugal on Thursday, July 4, to pay their final respects to Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who both died tragically in a car crash in northwestern Spain earlier this week. The sombre event took place in their hometown of Gondomar, near Porto, at the Capela da Ressurreição, where the brothers’ bodies lay in repose ahead of their funeral.

The 28-year-old footballer and his brother were involved in a fatal accident on the A-52 motorway in Galicia, Spain. They had been travelling in a Lamborghini Huracán, which reportedly veered off the road due to a suspected tyre blowout. The vehicle crashed and caught fire, leaving both men dead at the scene.

The wake in Gondomar was attended by grieving family members, close friends, local dignitaries, and fans of the player who had risen to international fame. The bodies were flown from Spain to Portugal on Wednesday, with Jota’s coffin draped in Liverpool and Portugal scarves, a gesture that underscored his deep connection to both club and country.

Diogo Jota had married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, just 11 days before the tragic crash. The couple shared three children. His sudden passing has sent shockwaves throughout the football community, prompting an outpouring of tributes from around the world.

Liverpool FC, where Jota played since 2020, described him as a “beloved member of the squad and a player admired for his professionalism, skill, and warm personality.” Teammates such as Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, Andy Robertson, and Jordan Henderson all took to social media to express their sorrow and celebrate his life. Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo also paid tribute, posting an emotional message mourning the loss of his national teammate.

A minute’s silence has been observed at various football events, including the ongoing UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 matches. Clubs such as FC Porto, Wolverhampton Wanderers (his former club), and Benfica have all flown their flags at half-mast in his honour. At Liverpool’s Anfield stadium, fans have left flowers, scarves, and messages outside the gates in a moving show of solidarity and grief.

The funeral service is scheduled to take place on Friday, July 5, at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar. Local authorities have confirmed that additional security and crowd control measures will be in place, given the anticipated number of attendees.

As the world of football comes to terms with the devastating loss, Diogo Jota is being remembered not just as a brilliant forward on the pitch, but as a family man, teammate, and role model who inspired many.
