Why Opposition Coalition Leaders May Soon Be Divided, Says Presidency

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, African Democratic Congress (ADC) Emblem, and Atiku Abubakar,

The Presidency has forecasted that the newly established opposition coalition, formed in anticipation of the 2027 elections, will soon be beset by internal discord due to the irreconcilable personal ambitions of its principal leaders.

In a statement released on Thursday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, the coalition is described as a tenuous alliance bound merely by a shared animosity towards the President, rather than any collective vision or ideology.

Onanuga cautioned that such a configuration is destined to disintegrate as individual interests inevitably collide.

He observed that many coalition members have long distanced themselves from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and are merely exploiting the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a vehicle to reclaim political prominence.

Onanuga forewarned that the coalition’s absence of a cohesive ideology or agenda renders it unsustainable, arguing that its members are driven not by national interest but by a desperation to escape political insignificance.

He stated, “My advice to Nigerians: Remain vigilant. A political entity devoid of a clear agenda or ideology—whose members are united only by their animus towards President Tinubu—cannot be beneficial for our nation. It will only regress us by decades.

“These politicians are opportunists, ravenous for power, not for the welfare of Nigerians but for their own gain. They seek power at any cost because they cannot endure another four years in political obscurity or be consigned to political oblivion.

“What is inevitable is that the group will soon disband due to their irreconcilable personal aspirations.

The coalition, which recently embraced the ADC as its official political platform, convened a high-level meeting in Abuja on Tuesday, during which former Senate President David Mark was appointed interim National Chairman, and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola was named interim National Secretary.

The coalition comprises several eminent politicians, including Atiku Abubakar, Nasir El-Rufai, Peter Obi, and Rotimi Amaechi, who are anticipated to play pivotal roles in contesting President Tinubu’s re-election endeavor in 2027.
