Sowore Distances Self from Political Elites, Alleges Historical Wrongs by Nigerian Leaders

Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters and former presidential candidate, has issued a scathing commentary on the state of Nigeria’s political class, declaring that he has never participated in the alleged crimes and failures attributed to many of the country’s prominent leaders.

In a post shared via his official social media handle, Sowore made pointed references to a number of high-profile Nigerian politicians, accusing them of various forms of misconduct, including drug trafficking, looting, human rights violations, and betrayal of democratic principles.

“I did not join Bola Ahmed Tinubu in distributing heroin and cocaine in Chicago,” Sowore wrote, referencing long-standing but unproven allegations that have trailed the current Nigerian President.

He continued by stating, “I did not join Atiku Abubakar in looting the Nigerian Customs dry,” accusing the former vice president and recurring presidential hopeful of mismanaging public institutions during his time in office.

Sowore also took aim at former Senate President David Mark, alleging his involvement in financial misconduct and complicity in suppressing Nigeria’s democratic aspirations during the aftermath of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election.

On former Attorney General Abubakar Malami, Sowore wrote: “I did not join Malami in violating human rights and looting the treasury under Muhammadu Buhari’s watch, including banning Twitter,” pointing to controversies that defined Malami’s tenure, including the contentious suspension of Twitter in 2021.

He also accused ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai of “massacring Shiites and fueling religious genocide in Southern Kaduna,” and criticized Labour Party’s Peter Obi for allegedly working with the late military dictator, Sani Abacha, at the Tin Can Island ports.

Sowore did not spare others such as former Governor Sule Lamido and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, accusing the former of betraying the June 12 struggle and the latter of mismanaging funds in Rivers State.

The remarks have since sparked widespread reaction on social media, with some praising Sowore’s consistency in activism, while others have criticized him for making serious allegations without presenting new evidence.

Sowore, who has long positioned himself as an anti-establishment figure, has used his platform over the years to challenge corruption and demand accountability from Nigerian leaders.

His latest statement appears to reinforce his continued rejection of what he calls the “compromised political elite.”

As of the time of filing this report, none of the individuals mentioned had issued an official response to the allegations.
