NSITF Disburses ₦23 Million to Two ECS Beneficiaries in Lagos

The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has presented a total of ₦23 million to two beneficiaries under its Employee Compensation Scheme (ECS), reaffirming its commitment to providing financial protection for Nigerian workers and their families in the event of workplace-related injuries or death.
The cheques were presented at a brief ceremony held in Lagos, attended by top NSITF officials, representatives of the affected companies, and family members of the beneficiaries. Managing Director of the Fund, Barrister Olúwaṣeun Faleye, led the presentation, alongside the Deputy General Manager of Corporate Affairs, Alexandra Mede.
One of the beneficiaries, the widow of a late employee of MEDPLUS Pharmacy, received a cheque of ₦15.49 million. The deceased worker tragically lost his life in a boat accident while commuting to work. According to NSITF, the compensation also includes continued support for the children of the deceased, who will receive monthly stipends until they reach the age of 21 or complete university education.
The second beneficiary, an employee of Alexander Marius Investment, was presented a cheque for ₦7.8 million as reimbursement for medical expenses incurred as a result of a workplace-related incident.
Speaking during the ceremony, Barrister Faleye expressed condolences to the bereaved family, emphasizing that while no amount of money can replace a life, the ECS was designed to offer some relief and justice to those affected by workplace tragedies.
“We cannot bring back the dead or undo the pain that has been inflicted. But what we can do, and must continue to do, is to ensure that justice and support reach those left behind,” he stated.
Alexandra Mede added that the ECS is a transparent and effective mechanism established by law to ensure that Nigerian workers are protected against workplace risks. She urged more organizations to register their employees under the scheme, stressing that timely intervention from the fund depends on employer compliance.
Also present at the event was the Head of Human Resources at MEDPLUS, Mrs. Onojobi Tolulope, who expressed appreciation for the support from NSITF. She pledged that MEDPLUS would continue to encourage other companies to enroll their employees in the scheme. A representative from the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) also commended NSITF’s diligence and transparency in administering the fund.
The Fund disclosed that this was only the beginning of a new round of ECS payments, with additional beneficiaries expected to receive their compensation in the coming days. The development is part of NSITF’s renewed effort to strengthen public trust in Nigeria’s social protection systems and ensure swift responses to workplace-related claims.
With rising awareness and improved implementation, the Employee Compensation Scheme continues to serve as a lifeline for injured workers and the families of deceased employees, offering financial stability during some of life’s most difficult moments.
