Joe Igbokwe Mocks Opposition Coalition, Labels ADC Member as ‘Luckiest Man’

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor, Joe Igbokwe, has again stirred political debate after describing a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the “luckiest man” in the newly formed opposition coalition.

In a series of Facebook posts, Igbokwe appeared to downplay the political relevance of the opposition alliance, suggesting that many of its members lack the credibility or capacity to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

Although Igbokwe did not mention the so-called “luckiest” ADC member by name, his post was laced with sarcasm and appeared to be a direct jab at the perceived weakness of the opposition’s internal makeup. He described most of the politicians in the coalition as lacking political weight, charisma, and grassroots connection, claiming that only one or two individuals in the alliance could be taken seriously.

“When I look at the composition of the so-called coalition, I see one or two that are real men,” Igbokwe wrote. “Others are unknown. They have nothing to bring to the table—no skill, no energy, no resources, no charisma, no history, no character. They are just lucky to be noticed at all.”

The opposition coalition, still in its formative stages, reportedly includes several prominent political figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Anambra governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi. The alliance is believed to be working behind the scenes to present a unified front capable of unseating the APC in 2027.

However, Igbokwe dismissed the effort as unserious and incoherent. He praised Atiku and El-Rufai as the only “credible men” among the group but argued that Atiku had already been politically weakened by the influence of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, especially due to the content of Obasanjo’s autobiography “My Watch,” which had sharply criticised the former vice president.

“Only one man is still struggling to remain standing in the midst of it all—Atiku. But Obasanjo finished him a long time ago,” Igbokwe added. “As for El-Rufai, I cannot deny his brilliance, but he’s not even making noise like the rest.”

His comments come amid growing speculation about the strength and cohesion of the opposition alliance. Some political observers have noted that while the coalition includes influential names, ideological differences and personal ambitions could make it difficult to maintain a united front.

Igbokwe’s statement is being viewed by some as an attempt to mock the opposition’s efforts and reaffirm APC’s confidence ahead of 2027. Others interpret it as a strategic move to sow seeds of doubt and division within the ranks of the coalition by elevating some members over others.

Neither the ADC nor any of the coalition members have officially responded to Igbokwe’s comments, but sources within the opposition suggest that efforts are still ongoing to finalise the terms of engagement among the parties involved.

As the build-up to 2027 begins to take shape, Igbokwe’s remarks serve as both a warning and a challenge—reflecting the ruling party’s readiness to confront the opposition and a belief that its internal fractures can be exploited well before the next electoral contest begins.
