Security Forces Nab Fulani Cattle Rustlers in Abia, Avert Communal Clash
Operatives of Operation Crush, a special security task force in Abia State, has apprehended three Fulani cattle rustlers on Monday in the Ohiya Community, located in Umuahia South Local Government Area.
The arrests were made following a credible tip-off that led to a swift intervention by the security team.
The suspects, all of Fulani descent, were reportedly caught in the act of rustling cattle, a crime that has been a growing source of tension between herders and local communities in parts of southern Nigeria.
Their arrest, officials say, prevented what could have rapidly spiraled into a full-blown communal crisis between the Fulani herding community and indigenes of the host area.
Addressing journalists in Umuahia, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security Matters, retired Navy Commander Macdonald Uba, praised the vigilance and professionalism of the Operation Crush personnel.
He emphasized that their timely response not only ensured justice but also safeguarded lives and property.
“This swift action by our security operatives demonstrates the effectiveness of proactive intelligence gathering and inter-community collaboration,” Uba stated. “Had the rustlers succeeded, the fallout might have led to retaliatory attacks, displacement of residents, and destruction of property.”
Commander Uba reassured the public of the government’s resolve to maintain peace and crack down on all forms of criminality.
He urged communities to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies by providing timely and accurate information that could help forestall violence and restore trust.
He also appealed for calm among residents, particularly urging restraint and dialogue as tools for conflict resolution.
“We are committed to ensuring that Abia remains a safe place for all who live and do business here, regardless of ethnicity or origin,” Uba added.
The arrested suspects are currently in custody and will be charged accordingly, according to police sources. Investigations are ongoing to determine if they are part of a wider cattle rustling syndicate operating in the region.
This latest development highlights the complex and sensitive nature of intercommunal relations involving nomadic herders in southern Nigeria, where security concerns, land disputes, and cultural differences often lead to clashes.
Authorities continue to call for greater understanding and the enforcement of laws that ensure peaceful coexistence.
