PDP Ends Tussle as NEC Reaffirms Sam Anyanwu as National Secretary

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially reaffirmed Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s substantive National Secretary, putting to rest weeks of internal disputes and uncertainties surrounding the key leadership position.

The resolution was made during the PDP’s landmark 100th NEC meeting held on Tuesday at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

The high-stakes gathering, attended by top party stakeholders, focused solely on clarifying the status of the national scribe amid a backdrop of conflicting claims and mounting pressure from various factions within the party.

Briefing journalists shortly after the session, the PDP’s Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, disclosed that the meeting had a singular agenda to evaluate and align the party’s stance with the outcome of its recent consultative engagement with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“Following careful deliberations and our interface with INEC, the NEC has unanimously resolved that Senator Samuel Anyanwu remains the duly recognized and substantive National Secretary of our great party,” Damagum stated.

The reaffirmation is expected to strengthen the PDP’s organizational cohesion ahead of future electoral contests and dampen the factional tensions that have recently plagued the party, particularly in the South-East.

Party insiders say the decision was critical for restoring internal discipline and clarity, especially as the PDP intensifies preparations for upcoming off-cycle governorship elections and its broader national political strategy.

Senator Anyanwu, who also previously served as the PDP’s Imo State governorship candidate, had been at the center of the controversy over whether his candidacy automatically vacated his seat as National Secretary. With Tuesday’s resolution, the party has now drawn a clear line backing continuity and experience at the helm of its secretariat operations.
