In Deference to Dantata, Senate Postpones North-West Public Hearings on Constitutional Amendment

The Senate has postponed its zonal public hearing on constitutional amendments for the North-West region as a mark of respect for the late philanthropist, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, who passed away in Saudi Arabia.
Senate President God’sWill Akpabio announced the decision during Tuesday’s plenary, citing consultations with stakeholders in the region.
The hearing, initially scheduled for the North-West zone, will be rescheduled for a later date, pending the return of the Deputy Senate President from Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, the Senate will proceed with the nationwide zonal public hearings on constitutional amendment proposals.
The hearings, set for July 4 and 5, will take place concurrently in five other geopolitical zones. Key proposals up for deliberation include local government autonomy, state police forces, and fiscal reforms.
The Senate will also consider a proposal to promote gender inclusivity through the reservation of additional legislative seats for women.
The Senate Committee on Constitution Review emphasized the importance of the hearings, describing them as a vital platform for citizens to engage in shaping Nigeria’s constitutional future.
