Governors Lean Toward Tinubu Amid Signs of Devolution Reforms, Says JJ. Omojuwa

Nigerian political commentator and media entrepreneur, JJ. Omojuwa, has attributed growing support for President Bola Tinubu among state governors to what he described as the president’s “quiet restructuring” agenda. In a post shared via social media on June 30,
Omojuwa argued that many governors are beginning to see tangible economic benefits in their states as a result of Tinubu’s push for devolution and fiscal empowerment.
According to Omojuwa, the president’s ongoing reforms are not just rhetorical but are having measurable impacts on state accounts—an outcome that is quietly winning over a significant number of governors. He emphasized that Tinubu’s approach to governance places importance on devolving power not only to states but also to local governments, giving sub-national units greater autonomy and financial breathing room.
“The real challenge for those who would rather these governors aren’t aligned with the president is, it has gone beyond just politics and rhetorics,” Omojuwa stated. “The president’s reforms are empowering the states, the governors are seeing it. You have to do more than talk to switch their minds.”
He also acknowledged that while self-interest cannot be entirely ruled out in the governors’ considerations, the broader economic improvements being felt at the state level suggest that Tinubu’s reforms are making a compelling case on their own.
Omojuwa further remarked that if governors were acting solely on the basis of their states’ economic interests, all 36 of them would likely endorse President Tinubu’s return. That some may not, he said, is due to competing personal or political interests.
His commentary comes at a time when political alignments ahead of the next general election are beginning to take shape, and debates around fiscal federalism, state autonomy, and local government reforms continue to stir discussions across the country.
