Ancelotti Names Luka Modrić as His Pick for 2025 Ballon d’Or

Davide Ancelotti, son of Carlo Ancelotti and former assistant coach at Real Madrid, has declared Croatian veteran Luka Modrić as his personal pick for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, sparking conversation across the football world about age, legacy, and performance.

Speaking in an interview with Madrid Xtra, Ancelotti was emphatic when asked who he believes deserves the coveted prize this year.

“This year? Luka Modrić,” he said. “He still has a lot of football to give. Football is evolving, but Luka plays with his head—he can play as long as he wants.”

At 39, Modrić remains one of the most admired midfielders in world football. Though no longer a regular starter at Real Madrid, he played a pivotal role off the bench last season, featuring in 60 matches and contributing to 13 goals across all competitions.

He started in only 17 La Liga games and 7 UEFA Champions League fixtures, yet his impact and leadership remained significant, especially during high-pressure moments.

The Croatian legend, who won the Ballon d’Or in 2018—breaking a decade-long Messi-Ronaldo duopoly—is reportedly preparing for a move to AC Milan after Real Madrid’s Club World Cup campaign.

That transfer, if completed, could mark the final chapter of his remarkable career in European football.

While Ancelotti’s support adds sentimental weight to Modrić’s chances, the competition for this year’s Ballon d’Or is fierce.

Players like Barcelona’s Raphinha, who has scored 28 goals and provided 22 assists this season, are viewed as front-runners. Others in the conversation include Kylian Mbappé, Mohamed Salah, and Ousmane Dembélé—all of whom have enjoyed stellar campaigns.

The Ballon d’Or ceremony is scheduled for September 22, 2025, in Paris. With nominations expected in August, debates over legacy versus current form are intensifying. Modrić’s inclusion in such conversations at his age is a testament to his enduring class, discipline, and footballing intelligence.

For now, Ancelotti’s backing may not influence the official vote, but it highlights the deep respect Modrić commands—even as a veteran in a sport dominated by younger stars.
