Prices of Beans, Cow Pea, other Staples Drop

The prices of cowpea and beans in Nigeria have significantly decreased in 2025.

A 100kg bag now sells for between N80,000 and N120,000, a notable drop from the peak of N240,000 in 2024.

Kabir Shuaibu, President of the Cowpea and Beans Farmers, Processors, and Marketers Association of Nigeria (C&BFPMAN), attributed this price drop to improved harvests and favorable cultivation conditions.

The association is optimistic about continued increased harvests, which would benefit both farmers and consumers.

The price reduction is a welcome relief for traders and consumers who struggled with high prices the previous year. Shuaibu explained that the primary reason for the price drop is a record surge in harvest yield, largely due to improved weather conditions and expanded cultivation efforts.

Farmers experienced harvests up to 10 times higher than previously recorded, resulting in increased supply and lower prices.

The improved yields are attributed to better farming practices, such as planting beans and cowpeas alongside corn.

This approach has led to a significant increase in production, with a hectare of land producing triple its usual harvest of 10,000 bags.

Traders confirm the decline in prices and improved conditions. According to Esther Umeileka, a wholesaler and Managing Director of Fresh2Home Ltd., better yields and reduced pest infestations have led to a sharp increase in supply.

Zainab Ahmed, a beans trader at Oyingbo Market in Lagos, noted that consumer demand is recovering due to the price adjustment.

Consumers are relieved about the return of affordable beans, a staple food in most Nigerian households. Many families can now afford beans again, with prices ranging from N6,000 to N7,000 for a paint bucket, compared to N13,000 to N14,000 the previous year.

The price drop has brought significant relief to many, making beans more accessible to a wider audience.
