UNIUYO Medical Lecturers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Vice-Chancellor Appointment Dispute

Medical lecturers at the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) have begun an indefinite strike over a dispute regarding the appointment criteria for the institution’s next Vice-Chancellor. The strike, which started at midnight on June 26, 2025, affects all academic activities conducted by clinical lecturers.
The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital chapter declared the strike after an Extraordinary General Meeting. The lecturers expressed dissatisfaction with the university’s alleged exclusion of medical academics from the Vice-Chancellorship application process.
The current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nyaudo Ndaeyo, is set to complete his tenure in December. The lecturers’ union is demanding a more inclusive application process and a public apology from the Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Muiz Banire (SAN), for his perceived dismissive response to their concerns.
The strike affects various academic activities, including lectures, seminars, practicals, and examinations. The lecturers have outlined conditions for ending the strike, including a public correction regarding the acceptance of Postgraduate Medical Fellowship in place of PhD. for Professors in Clinical Medicine.
