Increase Funding for Healthcare, Bishop of Abeokuta Diocese Urges Politicians

The Catholic Bishop of Abeokuta Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Odetoyinbo, has urged governments at all levels to increase funding for the healthcare sector.

This call aims to reverse the trend of health workers leaving Nigeria for better opportunities abroad.

The bishop made this appeal during the 130th-anniversary celebration of Sacred Heart Hospital in Lantoro, Abeokuta.

He expressed concern over the exodus of healthcare professionals, noting that many trained in Nigeria’s institutions eventually seek opportunities elsewhere.

“We train them here, they do their practicals in our hospital, but when they graduate, they disappear,” he said, highlighting the challenges faced by both public and private sectors in retaining skilled workers.

The bishop appealed to Nigerian doctors and nurses to remain committed to their roles despite the challenges.

He emphasized the need for government support to improve healthcare infrastructure, equipment and remuneration. “There’s still much to do here,” he said, encouraging professionals to stay and contribute to the nation’s healthcare system.

Increased funding, according to the bishop, is crucial for addressing the sector’s challenges.

He called on state and federal governments to prioritize healthcare, ensuring better working conditions and retention of skilled professionals.
