Senate Confirms Recruitment of 30,000 Youth into Nigeria Police Force

The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the recruitment of 30,000 additional youths into the Nigeria Police Force to boost security efforts and address the shortfall in manpower within the country’s policing system.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Senator Ahmad Abdulhamid Malam Madori, announced the development in Abuja, stating that the exercise was approved by President Bola Tinubu as part of his administration’s security reform agenda. He noted that the Police Service Commission (PSC) will oversee the recruitment process, which will be open, transparent, and merit-based.

According to the senator, the recruitment will cover all 774 local government areas to ensure equal representation and national inclusiveness.

He urged interested applicants to await official announcements through national newspapers and the PSC’s verified channels, warning the public against fraudulent schemes and unofficial recruitment agents.

Senator Madori explained that the annual recruitment of 30,000 officers is part of a broader plan aimed at improving the officer-to-citizen ratio, in line with global standards. Nigeria currently lags behind the United Nations’ recommendation of one police officer per 450 citizens.

The senator emphasized that the new recruits, once enlisted, will be deployed to various regions to strengthen community policing and enhance response to security threats.

He stressed that training and equipping the new officers will be a key focus to ensure professionalism and effectiveness.

The federal government had earlier announced plans to recruit 30,000 personnel across other security agencies including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Fire Service, and Correctional Service.

The latest police recruitment is a separate initiative targeted specifically at bolstering internal security through the Nigeria Police Force.

The Senate Committee on Police Affairs pledged to monitor the recruitment process and ensure strict compliance with guidelines to uphold transparency and fairness throughout the exercise.
