Nigeria, EU to Hold Senior Officials Meeting in Abuja to Deepen Strategic Cooperation,.Says Tuggar
Nigeria and the European Union will hold a Senior Officials Meeting in Abuja from July 1 to 2, 2025, as both parties work to deepen their long-standing partnership across key sectors.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, who disclosed this, said the meeting would serve as a preparatory step towards the upcoming Nigeria-EU Ministerial Dialogue.
The Senior Officials Meeting will bring together policymakers and technical experts from Nigeria and the European Union to assess progress in their cooperation and chart a new course for future collaboration.
Ambassador Janet Olisa, Director of the Regions Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Mathieu Briens, Deputy Managing Director for Africa at the European External Action Service, will co-chair the meeting.
Tuggar noted that the agenda of the meeting will cover a wide range of issues including multilateral cooperation, peace and security, trade and investment, migration, digital innovation, climate action, humanitarian affairs, and human development.
He described the gathering as a significant opportunity to align strategies with the EU and unlock greater benefits for Nigerians, adding that it reflects the federal government’s foreign policy thrust of development-focused diplomacy.
Nigeria and the EU have maintained strong diplomatic and development relations for decades, with the EU serving as one of Nigeria’s major trade and development partners. Both sides are expected to review existing commitments, identify areas of improvement, and build momentum ahead of the Ministerial Meeting later this year.
The talks will also explore joint initiatives in youth empowerment, education, health, technology, and green economy transition. Officials say the discussions are crucial for addressing shared challenges such as regional insecurity, post-pandemic recovery, and climate change.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to pursue stronger cooperation with the EU under a framework built on mutual respect, accountability, and shared prosperity.
