NAF Airstrikes Kill Terrorists, Protect Civilians in Niger State

In a renewed military offensive against terrorism in northern Nigeria, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has successfully carried out precision airstrikes in Niger State, neutralizing several terrorists and safeguarding civilian populations in the region.
The operation, which took place in the Alawa Forest area of Shiroro Local Government Area, was part of Operation Whirl Punch, a coordinated effort aimed at dismantling insurgent strongholds across the North-Central and North-East regions of the country.
According to military sources, the airstrikes targeted high-value terrorist gatherings following credible intelligence reports.
Among those believed to have been neutralized are senior fighters linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’Awati Wal-Jihad (JAS), including notorious commanders Saddiku, Umar Taraba, and Kabiru Doctor. These individuals were reportedly coordinating logistics and training when the air force jets struck.
The Nigerian Air Force deployed multiple aircraft to the scene, conducting surveillance before unleashing precision strikes that destroyed makeshift camps, gun trucks, motorcycles, and ammunition depots. The operation was designed not only to degrade terrorist capabilities but also to minimize collateral damage and protect surrounding civilian settlements.
NAF spokesman, Group Captain Kabiru Ali, confirmed the successful execution of the mission, noting that many insurgents fled toward the Birnin Gwari area in neighbouring Kaduna State following the strike.
He emphasized that these operations reflect the military’s commitment to maintaining air superiority and supporting ground troops in counterinsurgency campaigns.
“This was a clean operation, carried out with precision to eliminate threats and avoid civilian casualties,” he said.
Beyond Niger State, similar aerial offensives have also been launched in Borno State, particularly in the Mandara Mountains and Sambisa Forest, where multiple terrorist hideouts were destroyed in recent weeks.
Security analysts say these operations mark a strategic shift in Nigeria’s fight against insurgency, leveraging intelligence-led airpower to cripple terrorist movements and restore confidence in vulnerable communities.
The latest development comes as the military seeks to regain public trust following past controversies involving accidental civilian casualties in previous air operations.
Authorities have assured the public that all recent missions are being conducted with heightened surveillance and accountability to ensure civilian safety.
As Operation Whirl Punch continues, the Nigerian Armed Forces are expected to intensify efforts to flush out remaining insurgents, stabilize the affected regions, and pave the way for the return of displaced residents.
