Fubara, Amaewhule Reunite in Abuja Peace Talks Towards Resolving Rivers Political Crisis

Suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the embattled Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, met face-to-face in Abuja on Thursday for a high-level peace meeting.

The closed-door reconciliation session, which involved other aggrieved lawmakers, is the first formal interaction between the warring factions since the crisis erupted late last year.

Multiple sources familiar with the meeting confirmed that it ended on a remarkably positive note.

According to eyewitnesses, both Fubara and Amaewhule were seen holding hands and sharing laughter after the talks a stark contrast to the months of tension, legal battles, and political brinkmanship that have rocked Rivers State.

A source present at the meeting told The Cable, “The suspended governor is determined to make peace. He has started the real engagement.” The source described the atmosphere as “calm but determined,” signaling a readiness by both camps to prioritize reconciliation over prolonged confrontation.

The political standoff between Governor Fubara and the State Assembly, largely seen as loyal to his predecessor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has led to legislative paralysis and public uncertainty in Rivers.

The Abuja peace meeting follows mounting pressure from key political stakeholders, party leaders, and civil society groups urging both sides to deescalate and find common ground in the interest of governance and stability.

While no official communiqué was released after the meeting, insiders hint that the parties have agreed to begin structured negotiations that could lead to a formal power-sharing understanding or legislative reinstatements.

Analysts say the renewed engagement may signal the beginning of the end of the political turmoil in Rivers State, offering a pathway to healing and institutional restoration.
