Obidient Group Take Their Anger to INEC, Apply For Party Registration

In a significant development, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 110 associations have applied for registration as new political parties in Nigeria. The applications, which were disclosed by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, on Wednesday, include notable groups such as the Obidient Peoples Party and the Advanced Democratic Alliance (ADA).

The Obidient Peoples Party, which has Mr. Barry Avotu Johnson as its protem national chairman, is one of two applications referencing the Obidient movement, a political wave associated with former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi. The second application is named Progressive Obedients Party.

The ADA, on the other hand, is the proposed political platform by members of the anti-Tinubu coalition, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State governor, Mr Rotimi Amaechi; former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and others.

According to Prof. Yakubu, all submissions are being processed in accordance with the law, and no association will receive preferential treatment. The full list of associations seeking INEC registration as political parties includes a diverse range of groups, from the Key of Freedom Party to the Advanced Democratic Alliance (ADA).

The development is seen as a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, with many of the new parties likely to challenge the dominance of established parties such as the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
