Police Arrest Suspects Linked to Yelwata Massacre
The joint security services in Benue State have announced a significant breakthrough in their investigation into the recent attack in the Yelwata area, which resulted in the loss of lives and displacement of many residents.
At a press conference held on Sunday, June 22, the Commissioner of Police in Benue State, Emenari Infeanyi, confirmed that several suspects linked to the attack have been apprehended.
Although the identities of the suspects were not disclosed, Commissioner Infeanyi attributed the success of the operation to the support of Governor Hyacinth Alia, whose collaboration with the security agencies has been instrumental in the efforts to restore peace and security in the state.
The Commissioner also expressed gratitude to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, whose deployment of additional personnel to the state has bolstered the security presence in rural communities.
According to Commissioner Infeanyi, the deployment ordered by IGP Egbetokun has been completed, with officers assigned to strategic locations in rural areas to enhance policing efforts and provide a sense of security to the affected communities.
The move is expected to help prevent future attacks and reassure residents who have been displaced or affected by the violence.
The arrest of the suspects is a welcome development in the quest for justice and accountability for the victims of the Yelwata attack.
The people of Benue State have been calling for decisive action to address the security challenges facing the state, and the latest breakthrough is seen as a positive step towards achieving that goal.
As the investigation continues, the security agencies are urging residents to remain vigilant and provide useful information that can help in the apprehension of other suspects who may still be at large.
