Ojudu Defends Tinubu, Responds to Sule Lamido’s June 12 Criticism

Senator Babafemi Ojudu has responded strongly to former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido’s recent criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s role in Nigeria’s June 12 democratic struggle. Speaking on Channels Television’s “The Morning Brief,” Ojudu defended Tinubu’s legacy and described Lamido’s remarks as dismissive of the sacrifices madepro-democracy activists.

Lamido had downplayed Tinubu’s involvement in the fight against military dictatorship, a comment that has stirred political debate. In reaction, Ojudu, a former Special Adviser to the President and a key figure in the NADECO movement, accused Lamido of trying to rewrite history for political gain.

“Those of us who were in the trenches know the role played. He used his resources, voice, and influence to fight the military and keep the democratic dream alive,” Ojudu stated on the programme.

He added that Lamido’s criticism was “unfortunate and disrespectful” to the many Nigerians, some of whom lost their lives, who resisted military rule following the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

The discussion was part of a broader segment titled “State of the Nation: Revisiting June 12 Struggle, Narratives”, where guests reflected on the enduring significance of June 12 and the evolution of Nigeria’s democracy.

The programme also revisited the contributions of late MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the annulled 1993 election, whose struggle became the rallying point for Nigeria’s return to civilian rule
