Farmer Killed by Suspected Herders in Kwali Area of Abuja

A tragic incident occurred in Mai Kwari village, located in the Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where a farmer identified as Baba Yakubu was brutally killed by suspected herders while working on his farm last Thursday.

According to reports confirmed by a relative of the deceased, Danjuma Ishaku, the conflict began when some herders allowed their cattle to stray into Yakubu’s cassava farm. When Yakubu confronted them over the intrusion, an altercation reportedly broke out. In the course of the dispute, the farmer allegedly struck one of the cows with his cutlass after the herders refused to leave.

In retaliation, one of the herders allegedly attacked Yakubu with a cutlass, fatally stabbing him. The farmer was quickly rushed to Kwaita Clinic by his family, where he was later confirmed dead.

One of Yakubu’s sons, who witnessed the confrontation, managed to flee and reported the incident to local authorities. The police have since been alerted, and investigations into the matter are currently underway.

  • The killing has sparked renewed concerns over persistent farmer-herder clashes across Nigeria, which continue to threaten rural livelihoods and communal peace.
