Tinubu to Launch 2,000 Tractors in Boosting Agricultural Mechanization

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to officially launch 2,000 tractors under the Renewed Hope Agricultural Mechanization Program (HEDA), in a major push to modernize Nigeria’s agricultural sector and strengthen food security nationwide.

This development was disclosed by former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, via a tweet on Sunday.

The tweet included a 32-second video clip showing dozens of red tractors lined up for deployment and captioned:

“All set for the launch of the 2,000 Tractors for the Renewed Hope Agriculture Mechanization Program, HEDA, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. GCFR.”

The program is part of the president’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes self-sufficiency in food production, rural development, and economic diversification through agricultural transformation.

The initiative aims to reduce Nigeria’s overreliance on manual farming by providing mechanized support to farmers across the country.

The tractors, acquired through a bilateral partnership between Nigeria and Belarus, are the first installment in a broader plan to distribute 10,000 units of agricultural equipment, including ploughs, harrows, and planters. Nigeria has already taken delivery of the first batch of the equipment, which will be distributed through leasing schemes, direct purchases, and service centres across Nigeria.

The federal government signed agreements with foreign partners, including Belarus and the American company John Deere, to aid in manufacturing and assembling the tractors locally, thereby creating jobs and fostering skills transfer.

Meanwhile, some concerns have been raised regarding delays in previous agricultural programs, prompting lawmakers to demand transparency in the implementation of the HEDA initiative. Nonetheless, supporters of the administration view the tractor launch as a bold step toward achieving agricultural self-sufficiency.

The official commissioning ceremony is expected to feature key government officials, representatives of farmers’ associations, and international partners involved in the program.

As the country continues to battle rising food prices and insecurity in rural farming areas, the successful deployment of these tractors is seen as a potential game changer for Nigeria’s agricultural landscape.
