South West Tops Region with Highest Child Literacy in Nigeria

A recent report has highlighted significant disparities in literacy rates among children across different regions in Nigeria.
The data shows that the percentage of children who can write a simple word beyond their names varies substantially from one zone to another.
The South West region has the highest percentage of children with this basic writing skill, at 65.2%. The South South region follows closely, with 55.8% of children able to write simple words. In contrast, the North West and North East regions have the lowest percentages, with only 9.9% and 10% of children, respectively, possessing this fundamental literacy skill.
The South East region has a moderate literacy rate, with 44.1% of children able to write beyond their names. The North Central region fares slightly better, with 26.3% of children demonstrating this basic writing ability.
The disparity in literacy rates across regions underscores the need for targeted educational interventions to address the challenges faced by children in different parts of the country.
The Nigerian government and other stakeholders may need to develop strategies to improve access to quality education and support for children’s literacy development, particularly in regions with low literacy rates.
