Tragedy in Lagos: Minibus Driver Killed as Container Truck Topples on Old Ipaja Road

A fatal accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday along Old Ipaja Road in Lagos, claiming the life of a commercial minibus driver after a 40-foot containerized truck lost control and fell onto the vehicle. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) attributed the incident to brake failure on the part of the truck.
According to a statement by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, the heavily loaded truck suffered a brake malfunction, resulting in a catastrophic collision with the minibus. The driver of the minibus was killed on the spot, while three passengers miraculously survived without serious injuries. They were promptly handed over to emergency medical responders for evaluation and care.
The incident caused major traffic congestion in the area. LASTMA operatives swiftly moved to implement traffic diversion and control strategies to ease the gridlock and manage the scene.
Eyewitnesses reported that the truck driver attempted to flee after the accident but was immediately apprehended by alert LASTMA officers and handed over to law enforcement authorities for further investigation.
In a statement of condolence, the Lagos State Government expressed deep sympathy to the family of the deceased. Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Sola Giwa, stressed the urgent need for strict mechanical inspections of articulated vehicles, especially their braking systems.
“This tragic incident underscores the importance of rigorous vehicle maintenance and regulatory compliance among truck operators,” Giwa said. He reiterated the government’s commitment to road safety, emphasizing the enforcement of traffic laws and emergency preparedness to prevent further loss of life.
Emergency responders from multiple agencies collaborated in clearing the accident site and restoring normalcy to the affected area.
