Sanwo-Olu Parleys APC Leaders, Candidates Ahead of Lagos LG Polls
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has met with All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders, party stakeholders, and local government candidates at the State House, Marina, as part of intensified preparations for the July 12 local government elections in the state.
The closed-door meeting brought together key figures in the Lagos APC, including the state party chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi; Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa; GAC chieftain, Prince Tajudeen Olusi; and all chairmanship and councillorship candidates vying for office across the 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas (LCDAs).
Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Abimbola Salu-Hundeyin, urged party candidates to prioritize performance and community-focused governance. He said the APC would no longer offer automatic re-election to underperforming local officials, stressing that public service must now be anchored on delivery and accountability.
“As a party, we will support our candidates to win, but re-election will not be automatic. You must show results. Every chairmanship candidate must submit a detailed development plan for their locality. That plan will serve as a performance benchmark,” he said.
Earlier in the week, the APC officially flagged off its campaign at the party secretariat in Ogba. During the ceremony, party flags were handed over to all 57 chairmanship and 376 councillorship candidates contesting in the coming election.
The ceremony, conducted on behalf of the governor by Salu-Hundeyin, signified the start of full campaign activities across all wards in the state.
APC chairman Cornelius Ojelabi reminded candidates of their responsibilities, saying the party is determined to monitor how public funds are spent at the grassroots level.
He warned that council chairmen must work closely with their deputies, describing them as “co-pilots, not spare tyres.”
Prince Tajudeen Olusi, addressing candidates and party faithful, emphasized the need for unity and reconciliation within the party. He advised that aspirants who lost during the primaries must be brought into campaign structures and post-election governance roles.
He also charged youths to take up leadership in street-level mobilization efforts ahead of the polls.
Speaker Obasa echoed this sentiment, urging party members to subordinate personal interests for the sake of the party’s collective success in the elections. He also reaffirmed the importance of community engagement in building public trust in the APC.
The APC has consistently dominated local government elections in Lagos, but the party leadership insists this year’s election must reflect a new standard of performance and inclusiveness.
The July 12 poll will test the party’s ability to maintain its political stronghold while delivering on promises of service and grassroots development.
