Jon Jones Retires from UFC, Tom Aspinall Named Undisputed Heavyweight Champion

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has officially confirmed the retirement of former heavyweight champion Jon Jones, with Tom Aspinall now recognized as the undisputed UFC Heavyweight Champion.

The announcement was made by UFC President Dana White during a press conference following UFC’s latest event in Baku. White confirmed that Jones, who had been inactive due to injury, has decided to hang up his gloves after a storied career that spanned over a decade.

“Jon Jones has done everything in this sport. He’s been the greatest of all time, and now it’s time to move on,” White stated.

Jones, 37, departs the sport as one of its most iconic figures. A former light heavyweight and heavyweight titleholder, he retires with a record of 28 wins, 1 loss, and 1 no contest, having defended his title multiple times and solidifying his legacy as one of MMA’s greatest champions.

With Jones out of the title picture, Tom Aspinall, who had previously held the interim heavyweight title, has now been elevated to the status of undisputed champion.

The British fighter captured the interim title in late 2023 and defended it successfully, showcasing explosive power and tactical precision. Following the official announcement of Jones’ retirement, Aspinall expressed pride and readiness to take the division forward.

“It’s official. I’m your new UFC Heavyweight Champion,” Aspinall said in a social media post. “Let’s bring some fire to this division!”

Aspinall now becomes the third British UFC champion in history, following the footsteps of Michael Bisping and Leon Edwards. Fans and analysts alike see him as a breath of fresh air for the division, which had been in limbo during Jones’ absence.

Jon Jones leaves behind a complex but undeniable legacy, having become the youngest UFC champion at age 23 and later moving up to claim the heavyweight crown. While his career was marred by controversies and long layoffs, his skill and dominance in the Octagon remain unmatched.

With a new champion now leading the heavyweight division, the UFC is poised for an exciting new chapter. Aspinall is expected to defend his title later this year, with several top contenders already eyeing a shot at the belt.
