Devastating Windstorm Sweeps through Sokoto Killing 5, Destroys 1,400 Houses, Displaces 1,736

A devastating windstorm has swept through Gwadabawa and Kware Local Government Areas of Sokoto State, claiming five lives and causing widespread destruction.

 

The disaster, which occurred on Tuesday, affected over 1,400 homes and vital public infrastructure, including schools and government buildings.

 

According to officials from the Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), who conducted a joint assessment, the storm destroyed 878 houses in Gwadabawa, affecting 1,306 households and displacing an estimated 7,836 individuals.

 

Eleven people sustained injuries, while five fatalities were confirmed in the Marabawa community.

 

In Kware, 523 houses were reported destroyed, affecting 1,403 households and injuring 18 persons. Government Secondary School Kware suffered significant damage to fences and classrooms. The home of Ahmad Abbas in Kofar-Barga was flattened, and approximately 100 houses were damaged in the 30-Quarters area.

 

SEMA is documenting all affected individuals and properties to facilitate humanitarian assistance from the state and federal governments.

 

The agency’s assessment team, including DPM Shehu Muhammad, Councillor Siba Sodangi, and community elder Adamu Abdullahi Talhi, visited the affected areas on Saturday to assess the damage.
