FCT Police Warn Officers Against Illegal Detention

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has issued a stern warning to its personnel, cautioning them against engaging in acts of illegal detention and extortion of residents.

According to a statement released by the command on Saturday, June 21, 2025, the warning is part of an intensified effort to uphold professionalism, integrity, and respect for human rights within the force. The police authorities stressed that any officer found guilty of misconduct will face strict disciplinary action.

The Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Benneth Igweh, emphasized that the command will not tolerate abuse of power under any guise, and urged the public to report cases of harassment, extortion, or illegal detention through official communication channels.

He reiterated the importance of public trust and cooperation in maintaining peace and order, noting that the police must serve as protectors and not oppressors of the people.

The move follows growing concerns from residents and civil society groups over alleged cases of rights violations by security personnel in the territory.

The FCT Police Command assured the public of its commitment to justice, transparency, and accountability, adding that internal monitoring units have been deployed to track and investigate erring officers.
