Palmeiras Beat Al Ahly 2-0 in Club World Cup Meet
Palmeiras secured a confident 2–0 win over Egyptian side Al Ahly on Thursday in their second Group A fixture of the FIFA Club World Cup, putting the Brazilian team in a strong position to advance to the knockout stage.
The match, played at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, came to life early in the second half after a tense and goalless first half.
The breakthrough came in the 49th minute when Al Ahly’s Wessam Abou Ali mistakenly deflected a free kick from Palmeiras into his own net, giving the South American champions the lead. Just 10 minutes later, José Manuel López extended Palmeiras’ advantage, finishing off a well-timed counterattack to put the result beyond doubt.
Despite the scoreline, the match was momentarily overshadowed by an unexpected weather delay. In the 63rd minute, the referee halted play due to a thunderstorm warning, prompting an evacuation of fans and players for safety.
Although the skies remained clear and dry, the suspension lasted nearly an hour before the game resumed.
Palmeiras maintained composure and control throughout, managing the final minutes professionally to seal the win.
With this result, Palmeiras now sit at the top of Group A with four points. Al Ahly, who had drawn their previous match, are left with just one point and face a difficult task in their final group fixture. Palmeiras will meet Inter Miami next, while Al Ahly prepare to face FC Porto.
The victory not only puts Palmeiras in a favorable qualification spot but also makes them one of the early frontrunners for the title, as they continue their quest to bring the Club World Cup trophy back to South America.
