Lagos, Kaduna, 10 Other Cities to Host Reps’ Zonal Hearing on Constitution Review
The House of Representatives has announced that Lagos, Kaduna, and 10 other cities across Nigeria will host zonal public hearings as part of the ongoing process to review the 1999 Constitution.
The hearings are scheduled to hold from July 11 to July 20, 2025, and will be conducted in two phases—covering both the northern and southern parts of the country.
The Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Kalu, who also chairs the Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, disclosed this development and said the hearings are meant to engage citizens and stakeholders in an inclusive legislative process that captures diverse opinions on constitutional amendments.
In the northern region, hearings will take place in Minna (covering Niger, Kwara, and Kogi), Lafia (Nasarawa, Plateau, Benue, and the FCT), Kaduna (Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Katsina), Sokoto (Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi), Gombe (Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba), and Maiduguri (Borno, Yobe, Adamawa) between July 11 and 13.
For the southern region, the sessions will be held in Yenagoa (Bayelsa, Edo, Delta), Calabar (Cross River, Rivers, Akwa Ibom), Enugu (Enugu, Ebonyi, Abia), Owerri (Imo, Abia, Ebonyi), Lagos (Lagos, Ogun, Oyo), and Akure (Ondo, Ekiti, Osun) from July 18 to 20.
Kalu emphasized that the House of Representatives is determined to carry all Nigerians along in the constitutional review process, adding that feedback from the hearings will guide the legislative amendments.
He urged citizens, civil society organisations, traditional institutions, and other interest groups to participate actively and make meaningful contributions.
The zonal hearings form a key part of the House’s commitment to ensuring that the constitution reflects the aspirations and values of the Nigerian people. Issues expected to be discussed include local government autonomy, devolution of powers, state police, fiscal federalism, and other proposed reforms.
