IGP Egbetokun Receives AU Commendation for Nigeria Police Role in Somalia Peace Mission

The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has been commended by the African Union (AU) for the outstanding performance and professionalism of Nigerian police officers deployed in Somalia as part of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

The commendation came during a diplomatic visit to the Force Headquarters in Abuja by the AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye. The AU envoy hailed the Inspector-General and the Nigeria Police Force for their significant contributions to peacekeeping efforts in Somalia, noting that their efforts have enhanced security, stability, and the rebuilding of public trust in the war-torn East African nation.

Ambassador Adeoye specifically praised the Nigeria Police Formed Police Unit (NFPU) operating under ATMIS, acknowledging their courage and commitment despite the difficult operational terrain. He described their service as a model for other peacekeeping units across the continent and credited the leadership of IGP Egbetokun for instilling a culture of discipline and dedication in the force.

“Nigerian police officers have distinguished themselves in Somalia through their professionalism, resilience, and readiness to serve under challenging conditions.

Their contribution to peace in the Horn of Africa is not only commendable, it is transformative,” Adeoye stated.

In his remarks, IGP Egbetokun expressed gratitude for the recognition, assuring the AU of Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to regional peacekeeping missions. He emphasized the importance of African-led security initiatives and reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s resolve to continue playing a frontline role in fostering peace across the continent.

“Our officers in Somalia have represented the ideals of Nigeria and the African Union with honour. We remain committed to supporting ATMIS and ensuring that our personnel are adequately equipped and supported to perform their duties,” Egbetokun said.

He also pledged to address logistical and welfare challenges faced by police personnel deployed in Somalia and other peacekeeping missions.

Nigeria has been a key contributor to AU peace efforts in Somalia for over a decade, first under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and now under ATMIS, which replaced it in 2022. Nigerian police units in Somalia provide critical services such as protecting key installations, escorting humanitarian convoys, and mentoring the Somali Police Force.

The AU’s endorsement of Nigeria’s contributions underscores the country’s growing influence in regional security and peacebuilding initiatives. The visit also highlighted the AU’s call for strengthened continental collaboration against transnational crimes and terrorism.

As Nigeria continues to play a leading role in African peacekeeping operations, the commendation from the AU serves as a reaffirmation of its strategic importance in efforts to stabilize fragile states and promote long-term security across the region.
