Oyo State to Sink N63.4 Billion into Renovating Government House for 50th Anniversary

The Oyo State Government has approved the renovation of the Government House in Agodi, Ibadan, at a cost of ₦63.4 billion as part of activities to commemorate the state’s 50th anniversary.

The decision was reached at a recent meeting of the State Executive Council presided over by Governor Seyi Makinde. According to government sources, the renovation will involve a comprehensive upgrade of existing structures, including residential quarters, administrative offices, landscaping, and the installation of modern security and utility infrastructure.

Officials say the project is part of a broader infrastructure development plan aimed at modernising state facilities and presenting a befitting image of Oyo State during the golden jubilee celebrations.

The state government also noted that the project is expected to generate employment and boost the local economy through the engagement of indigenous contractors and workers.

While the initiative has drawn mixed reactions from residents and civil society groups, with some questioning the cost and timing, the government insists the renovation is necessary to preserve the historical and functional significance of the Government House.

It added that the ₦63.4 billion expenditure will be managed transparently and align with the administration’s ongoing commitment to infrastructural renewal.

Oyo State was created on February 3, 1976, and preparations are already underway for various anniversary activities, including public lectures, cultural events, and the unveiling of legacy projects.

The renovation of the Government House is expected to be one of the major highlights of the celebrations.
