Oba of Benin Receives 119 Stolen Benin Artefacts From Netherlands

The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, on Wednesday received 119 stolen Benin artefacts from the Netherlands, marking a major moment in the ongoing repatriation of cultural treasures looted during the colonial era.

The artefacts, which include royal bronzes, plaques, and other sacred objects, were originally taken from the ancient Benin Kingdom by British forces during the 1897 invasion.

The items were officially handed over to the Oba in a ceremony held at the palace in Benin City, Edo State.

The return of the artefacts followed diplomatic engagements between Nigerian and Dutch authorities, supported by cultural institutions and heritage advocates.

The Dutch government had earlier pledged to return the artefacts as part of a broader commitment to acknowledge and correct the wrongs of colonial history.

Speaking at the event, Oba Ewuare II expressed gratitude to the Dutch government and all those involved in the restitution process. He described the artefacts as sacred and symbolic elements of Benin’s identity and history.

“These artefacts are not just works of art; they are living symbols of our history, culture, and identity. Their return is not only a restoration of our heritage but a healing of historical wounds,” the Oba said.

He reiterated that the Benin Palace is the rightful custodian of the returned treasures and pledged that they would be preserved and displayed within the kingdom for the benefit of future generations.

This return adds to the growing list of repatriated Benin artefacts previously received from Germany and the United Kingdom, as momentum builds around the world for the return of looted African heritage.
