Governors Unite,.Strategise on Food Security
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the federal government to address the pressing issue of food security in the country.
This decision was reached after a meeting of the 36 state governors in Abuja, where they discussed various challenges affecting the nation, including the rising cost of food.
In a communique signed by the forum Chairman, Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State, and read by Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, the governors pledged to work closely with the federal government to implement measures that will enhance food security and reduce the cost of living for Nigerians.
One of the key areas of focus is the harmonization of levies and the removal of illegal checkpoints, which have been identified as major obstacles to the free movement of goods across states.
The governors recognized that these checkpoints not only increase the cost of transportation but also lead to delays and losses, ultimately affecting the prices of food and other essential commodities.
By removing these checkpoints and streamlining the levies, the governors aim to facilitate the smooth movement of goods and reduce the cost of food, making it more accessible and affordable for Nigerians.
This move is expected to have a positive impact on the economy, as it will encourage trade, stimulate economic growth, and improve the overall well-being of citizens.
The governors also acknowledged the need for a coordinated approach to address the root causes of food insecurity, including climate change, soil degradation, and inadequate irrigation systems.
They emphasized the importance of investing in agriculture, providing support to farmers, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices to increase food production and reduce reliance on imports.
The NGF’s commitment to tackling food security challenges is a welcome development, as it demonstrates the governors’ willingness to work together and with the federal government to address the pressing issues affecting the country.
By collaborating and sharing best practices, the governors can leverage their collective expertise and resources to drive meaningful change and improve the lives of Nigerians.
As the country continues to grapple with the challenges of food insecurity, the NGF’s pledge to work with the federal government offers a glimmer of hope. With a coordinated and sustained effort, it is possible to make significant progress in addressing the root causes of food insecurity and ensuring that all Nigerians have access to nutritious and affordable food.
The success of this initiative will depend on the governors’ ability to translate their commitment into concrete actions and to work together to drive positive change.
