President Tinubu Defends Leadership During Benue Visit Amid Yelewata Massacre Fallout
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a passionate speech during his visit to Benue State, addressing growing criticism over the government’s handling of security in the wake of the recent massacre in Yelewata community.
In a speech that was both emotional and pointed, the President reaffirmed the value of human life, stating, “The value of life, human life, is greater than that of a cow.” His remarks came amid national outrage following the killing of over 150 villagers in Yelewata by suspected herdsmen.
Tinubu warned that internal conflict only fuels instability and empowers political adversaries. “It’s only when you open the door for conflict that political enemies will come in. Political enemies, they don’t want you to succeed,” he said.
The president also took a moment to confront critics head-on. “Have you just realised that? Governor. Governor,” he said, pausing to underline his frustration. “No matter what I do, they will see me this way.”
He went on to share his engagement with public opinion, saying, “I read paper every time and listen to television whenever I have time, just to watch who is abusing me and what type of abuse. I learn lessons from some of the political ones, too. Because I can’t see it all.”
The President acknowledged that some criticism helps inform his decisions. “And it’s from the mouth of my critics that I will, oh, okay, that is what you did. I am the president. I will go and do it.”
Concluding his remarks, Tinubu made a defiant statement: “I won’t blame you. You are a failure. You just spoke. I am a performer.”
The President’s visit and speech come amid heightened security concerns and humanitarian challenges in Benue State, particularly in the wake of the Yelewata tragedy. While some praised his transparency and resolve, others have called for more concrete federal action to prevent further bloodshed.
