Over 700 Still Missing After Mokwa Flash Floods, Says Niger State Government

The Niger State government has announced that over 700 persons are still missing following the recent devastating flooding in Mokwa Community, Mokwa Local Government Area of the state.
This was disclosed by Governor Umaru Bago, represented by his Deputy, Mr. Yakubu Garba, during a condolence visit by Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to General Sani Abacha, and his friends.
According to the government, the flood disaster has claimed the lives of 207 people, with over 3,000 households displaced. The Deputy Governor revealed that the flood has caused extensive damage, with 400 houses damaged and 283 houses and 50 shops completely destroyed.
“We are still searching for over 700 persons who are still missing, and we are yet to ascertain their whereabouts,” Garba said. “The state government is working with professional organizations to determine the root cause of the flood, and we are awaiting the assessment results.”
The Niger State government has appreciated the donations and contributions from individuals and corporate organizations, describing the incident as a national disaster. Major Al-Mustapha, who led the delegation on the condolence visit, expressed his sympathy to the state government and the people of Mokwa over the devastating flood incident.
“We are here to register our condolences over the flood incident that happened in Mokwa, looking at the heavy losses and its impact on the state,” Al-Mustapha said. “We will meet with the traditional council, especially the chairman in Mokwa, and pray that the incident doesn’t happen again.”
The delegation, comprising influential individuals from different parts of the country, aims to offer sympathy and support to the state government and affected communities.
They also plan to meet with the traditional council to find ways to prevent similar incidents in the future and improve town planning and living conditions.
The flood disaster in Mokwa Community has brought attention to the need for urgent action to prevent such incidents in the future.
