Peter Obi Demands Support for Indigenous Businesses Amid Oshiomhole–Air Peace Face-Off

Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has called for increased support for Nigerian-owned businesses following a recent altercation between Senator Adams Oshiomhole and domestic airline, Air Peace, at the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos.

Obi made his remarks via his official X handle, where he expressed concern over the challenges faced by indigenous companies and urged political leaders and the elite to support rather than frustrate local enterprises.

The intervention came after reports emerged that Oshiomhole had missed his scheduled flight and allegedly engaged in a verbal exchange with staff of Air Peace.

The airline accused the senator of making inflammatory remarks and disrupting operations.

Speaking on the controversy, Obi praised Air Peace for its professionalism and resilience, particularly in its efforts to operate international flights on the Lagos–London route. He said he had personally flown the airline on that route nearly a dozen times and described their service as commendable.

“At a time when foreign airlines dominate our skies and repatriate billions of dollars in profits, Air Peace has shown uncommon courage by venturing into the international space. They should be encouraged, not attacked,” Obi stated.

He emphasized that businesses in strategic sectors such as aviation face immense operational hurdles, including high fuel costs, foreign exchange challenges, and infrastructural deficits. According to him, any indigenous business that withstands these conditions and still delivers quality service should be celebrated as a national asset.

Obi warned that the persistent culture of undermining local businesses through elite interference or hostile policies will continue to hamper Nigeria’s economic development. He reiterated that the growth of local industries is critical for job creation, reducing capital flight, and building national economic strength.

The incident between Oshiomhole and Air Peace continues to attract public attention, though both parties have yet to issue comprehensive follow-up statements.

Meanwhile, Obi’s comments have sparked wider conversations about the importance of protecting and promoting Nigerian businesses, particularly those that contribute significantly to employment and national pride.

Observers and business leaders have echoed Obi’s sentiments, urging the government and the public to rally behind homegrown companies.

They argue that sustained patronage, fair regulatory treatment, and political goodwill are necessary to ensure that Nigerian businesses can thrive both locally and on the global stage.
