Nigeria Is Not in a Democracy Under Tinubu, Says Peter Obi
Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has asserted that Nigeria is no longer operating under a true democracy since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office.
Obi made this statement during an interview in commemoration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day. He lamented what he described as a steady decline in democratic values, alleging that the current administration has eroded the fundamental principles of democracy.
“This is not a democracy,” Obi declared. “A government that disregards the rule of law, suppresses dissent, and sidelines the voices of the people is not a democratic one.”
He further claimed that freedom of speech is under threat, institutions are being weakened, and government actions increasingly lack transparency and accountability.
Obi’s comments come amid growing concerns from civil society and opposition figures over the state of governance in the country. Critics argue that the administration has taken a hardline approach to opposition, with increasing reports of clampdowns on activists and journalists.
The presidency has yet to officially respond to Obi’s remarks at the time of this report.
