Gattuso Named New Italy Coach After Spalletti’s Dismissal
Gennaro Gattuso has been appointed as the new head coach of the Italian national football team, following the sacking of Luciano Spalletti. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) confirmed the appointment on Saturday, marking a new chapter in Italy’s efforts to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Spalletti was relieved of his duties after a disappointing 3–0 defeat to Norway in a World Cup qualifier, ending his tenure after less than two years in charge. His final match at the helm had been a 2–0 victory over Moldova, but it was not enough to save his job after Italy dropped to third place in Group I.
Gattuso, a 47-year-old former midfielder who was part of Italy’s 2006 World Cup-winning squad, steps in with immediate effect. A press conference is scheduled for Thursday, June 19, in Rome, where he will be officially unveiled.
The fiery former player brings with him a wealth of experience, having managed several clubs across Europe including AC Milan, Napoli—where he won the Coppa Italia in 2020—Valencia, Marseille, and most recently, Hajduk Split. His coaching style is known for its intensity, discipline, and tactical rigor.
FIGC President Gabriele Gravina described Gattuso as “a symbol of Italian football,” praising his passion, leadership qualities, and alignment with the federation’s long-term vision. Gravina expressed confidence that Gattuso’s appointment would inject fresh energy into the national team’s World Cup campaign.
Italy will return to action on September 5 with a crucial qualifying match against Estonia in Bergamo, followed by a tie against Israel. Gattuso is expected to announce his coaching staff and initial squad list in the coming weeks, with names like Andrea Barzagli, Leonardo Bonucci, and Cesare Prandelli rumored to join his backroom team.
Italy has missed the last two World Cups and is under pressure to reclaim its place among global football’s elite. Gattuso’s immediate task will be to steady the team and secure qualification, with Italian fans hoping his trademark grit and determination can lead the Azzurri back to glory.
