Imo Community Calls for Aid Following Gunmen Attack 

The Agwa community in Imo State’s Oguta Local Government Area has petitioned President Bola Tinubu, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and Governor Hope Uzodimma to intervene in the recent attacks by armed herdsmen that have left several people dead and many injured.

 

The community, led by the Agwa Central Union, is demanding justice and compensation for the victims, citing the government’s failure to protect its citizens.

 

*Key Demands:*

 

– *Compensation*: N1 billion for the victims’ families to mitigate their sorrow

– *Security*: Establishment of a joint security task force along the Ejemekwuru-Agwa road to prevent further attacks

– *Protection*: Government protection for the community to live without fear

 

The community’s petition follows a June 4 attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen, which resulted in several deaths, injuries, and kidnappings.

 

A pregnant woman, Joy Osita Achugwo, was shot and is battling for survival in a hospital. The attack has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation, with many calling for urgent action to protect innocent lives.

 

Imo State Police Commissioner Aboki Danjuma has promised to facilitate the community’s complaints to the relevant authorities. However, he also urged the community to collaborate with security agencies by providing credible information to tackle security issues. Danjuma emphasized the importance of mutual trust, timely information-sharing, and sustained community engagement to achieve lasting peace .

 

The attacks have raised concerns about growing insecurity in the country, with many calling for urgent action to protect citizens. The Oguta Local Government Area Chairman, Ifeanyi Nnani, has condemned the attacks and assured the community of the government’s commitment to ensuring peace and tranquility return to Agwa Clan .
