As Victony Embarks on Sobriety Journey, He Reveals ‘I’ve Never Performed Sober’

Nigerian singer and songwriter, Victony, born Anthony Ebuka Victor, has made a striking revelation about his past performance habits.

In a candid interview on the Behind The Prestige podcast, the Afrobeats star confessed that he has never performed sober—an admission that has sparked wide conversations among fans and the music community.

The artist, known for hits like “Soweto” and “Holy Father”, said alcohol was a long-time pre-show ritual that helped him manage stage fright. However, Victony now says he’s decided to leave that chapter behind as he embraces a new, healthier phase in his career.

“I’ve never performed sober. I used to think I had to take something to be ready. But now I want to see my fans with my own eyes, feel the energy completely. That’s the real connection,” he said during the interview.

Victony explained that his past reliance on alcohol was more about coping with anxiety than indulgence. He described the transition away from those habits as difficult but necessary—both for his well-being and his artistry.

The singer also disclosed that he’s quit smoking and begun making health-conscious choices, including a regular fitness routine and a conscious effort to reduce substance use before shows.

“Staying fit is a new habit. I started two months ago and it’s been good,” he said. “I’m trying to do this tour sober—and it’s a big challenge. But I want it.”

This personal transformation comes just a few years after Victony’s near-death experience in April 2021. The artist was involved in a horrific car crash that left one dead and put him in a wheelchair for several months. After surviving a coma and undergoing multiple surgeries, Victony emerged from the experience with what he has since called “a new lease on life.”

That journey—from recovery to reinvention—has made his current commitment to sobriety even more meaningful. Many fans see this latest shift as part of his broader evolution from a breakout talent to a mature, introspective performer.

Victony is now preparing for an international tour, one that will mark his first series of performances without relying on alcohol. For fans, it’s more than just a lifestyle change—it’s a promise of a more vulnerable, grounded artist willing to connect deeply from the stage.

Critics and fellow musicians alike have praised his honesty, especially in an industry where substance use is often glamorized. By opening up about his journey, Victony is carving a new path—one where emotional clarity, health, and authenticity take center stage.

As his tour kicks off, all eyes will be on how this new chapter unfolds. For Victony, it’s not just about the music anymore—it’s about the man behind the microphone and his commitment to showing up fully present, sober, and stronger than ever.
