Those Who Call Us Rubber Stamp Don’t Know Why We’re Here, Says Akpabio

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has dismissed criticisms labeling the National Assembly as a “rubber stamp” institution, saying such remarks stem from ignorance about the legislature’s role in a democracy.

Speaking during a plenary session on Thursday, Akpabio stated that lawmakers were in the National Assembly to serve the interest of Nigerians through cooperation and constructive engagement, not constant confrontation with the executive.

“Those who call us rubber stamp don’t understand why we are here. We are here to work for the Nigerian people, to deliver on promises, and to ensure good governance through partnership, not hostility,” Akpabio said.

He emphasized that collaboration with the executive does not imply weakness, but is essential for policy implementation and national development.

Akpabio’s remarks come amid ongoing debates about the legislature’s independence and its oversight responsibilities, especially under the current administration.

The Senate President urged Nigerians to focus on the results being delivered, rather than misconstruing the relationship between both arms of government.
