Tinubu Preaches Tolerance for Harsh Words, Insults in Democracy

President Bola Tinubu has emphasized the importance of tolerance for harsh words and stinging insults in a democratic society.
Speaking on the floor, he noted that some of the best advice politicians receive comes from their most ferocious opponents.
Tinubu stressed that democracy requires a fair degree of tolerance for criticism, stating, “Call me any name, I’m not here to make you happy politically, and I will still call upon democracy to defend your rights.”
He highlighted the need to distinguish between malicious slander and libel, which should not be tolerated, and harsh words or criticisms that are a natural part of democratic discourse.
The President’s remarks underscore the importance of protecting civil liberties and promoting free speech, even when faced with unkind or critical words. By embracing tolerance for dissenting voices, Tinubu emphasized that democracy can foster a more harmonious and inclusive society in the long term.
