SAN Calls for INEC Headquarters to be Named After Late MKO Abiola

Dr. Wahab Shittu, a senior advocate of Nigeria, has made a compelling call to President Bola Tinubu to rename the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja after the late Chief MKO Abiola.

This proposal was put forth during the annual June 12 National Dialogue, an event organized by the Eminent Patriots of Nigeria, held in Lagos.

The dialogue, themed “Democracy without a Democratic Constitution: Which Way for Nigeria?”, provided a platform for Dr. Shittu to express his sentiments regarding the commemoration of Chief MKO Abiola’s legacy. According to Dr. Shittu, naming the INEC headquarters “MKO Abiola House” would be a fitting tribute to a man who played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s democratic history.

Dr. Shittu emphasized that such a gesture would serve as a constant reminder to the nation’s leaders of the importance of credible elections in democratic governance. By honoring Chief Abiola in this manner, the government would underscore its commitment to upholding the principles of democracy and electoral integrity that Abiola fought for.

Chief MKO Abiola, a businessman and politician, is remembered for his victory in the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, which is widely regarded as the freest and fairest election in Nigeria’s history. His legacy continues to symbolize the struggle for democracy and good governance in the country.

The call for naming the INEC headquarters after Chief Abiola is not just a gesture of respect but also a reminder of the critical role that free and fair elections play in sustaining democratic governance. Dr. Shittu’s proposal aligns with the broader discussions on electoral reforms and the need for a more robust democratic framework in Nigeria.
