Last Twin Saved By Mary Slessor Dies at 115

Madam Malinda Mgbafor Okereke, also known as Mama Nsu Bekee, the last surviving twin rescued by Scottish missionary Mary Slessor, has passed away at the age of 115.
Born around 1800 in Arochukwu, Abia State, Nigeria, Madam Okereke and her twin sister Mgbokwo were spared from the traditional practice of killing twins in their community thanks to Mary Slessor’s intervention.
Madam Okereke and her twin sister received formal education at Mary Slessor Primary School, Arochukwu, under the direct care of the Scots.
This education enabled the twins to develop a sound command of the English language, earning Madam Okereke the nickname “Mama Nsu Bekee,” meaning “Mama that speaks English”.
Mary Slessor played a significant role in saving the lives of Madam Okereke and her twin sister. According to reports, Slessor enforced a ban on twin murder in the area in 1876 and attended to the twins’ birth at her maternity in Obinagu, Amasu Village, Arochukwu.
Slessor subsequently adopted and fostered the twins herself.
Madam Okereke is survived by a son, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many relatives. She will be laid to rest on Saturday, August 30, in her family compound at Amasu, Arochukwu, after a funeral service at the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria. Madam Okereke passed away on March 5.
