Education Ministry Denies Approving History Book with Inaccuracies

The Federal Ministry of Education has issued a statement clarifying that it did not approve a history textbook that has been accused of containing historical inaccuracies.

The ministry’s response comes after a petition was submitted by the Concerned Citizens of Yoruba Origin and Supporters of Truth, raising concerns over the textbook’s claims regarding the founding of Ile-Ife.

According to a circular signed by the Director, Press and Public Relations, Folasade Boriowo, the ministry was made aware of the petition, which alleged that the textbook, authored by Tony and Ijeoma Duru and published by Tones Publishers, contains misleading and potentially harmful information.

However, the ministry has stated that the textbook was not authored, commissioned, or approved by the Federal Ministry of Education and is not among the instructional materials approved for use in public basic education institutions across the country.

The ministry has appreciated the vigilance and concern of stakeholders regarding the potential of such content to misinform learners and provoke ethnic tension.

While acknowledging that the concerns are valid, Boriowo emphasized that the ministry is not responsible for materials that fall outside its regulatory framework. Instructional materials officially endorsed by the ministry, she explained, are carefully curated to meet national education standards and promote literacy, equity, and access to quality education throughout Nigeria.

Despite the ministry’s lack of involvement in the publication, Boriowo has promised that the issue will be thoroughly investigated in collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and other relevant agencies.

The ministry will take all necessary steps to address the anomalies identified and ensure a fair and timely resolution that respects historical truth and promotes unity.

The Federal Ministry of Education has reaffirmed its commitment to providing quality, inclusive, and culturally respectful education that fosters peace, understanding, and national development.

The ministry’s statement serves as a reassurance to stakeholders that it prioritizes the accuracy and sensitivity of educational materials, particularly those that pertain to Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and history.

As the investigation unfolds, educators, historians, and community leaders are urged to remain vigilant and report any instances of inaccurate or misleading information in educational materials.

The ministry’s prompt response to the petition demonstrates its dedication to upholding the highest standards of education and promoting a culture of truth, respect, and unity in Nigeria.
